Education for Sustainable Development course provides acquiring skills, attitudes, values, and knowledge necessary to create a sustainable future. Education for Sustainable Development incorporates key sustainable development issues into teaching and learning. They tackle the problem of society, environment and economy, e.g. responsibility for biodiversity, sustainable consumption, climate change, disaster risk reduction, education, poverty. It also includes participatory teaching and learning methods which motivate and empower learners to change their behaviour in order to gain sustainable perspective of living. Education for Sustainable Development promotes life skills and various competencies like critical and creative thinking, making decisions, cooperation and taking actions for sustainability. During our classes we will concentrate on: I. Understanding sustainable development (SD) We will introduce the notion pf sustainability, reflect on various definitions which are connected with the topic, as well as focus on its history and development. II. Exploring global contemporary issues This part reflects the participatory approach towards learning as it demands action from students. We will look at various issues connected with sustainability. Among them we will find: 1) Poverty 2) Hunger 3) Good health and well being 4) Quality education 5) Gender quality 6) Clean water and sanitation 7) Affordable and clean energy 8) Decent work and economic growth 9) Industry, innovation and infrastructure 10) Inequalities 11) Cities and Communities 12) Consumption and production 13) Climat actions 14) Life below water 15) Life on land 16) Peace, justice and institutions III) Group project This part introduces various teaching and learning strategies for sustainable development (ESD), such as: 1) Experiential learning 2) Storytelling 3) Values education 4) Enquiry learning 5) Appropriate assessment 6) Future Problem Solving 7) Learning outside the classroom 8) Community Problem Solving We will focus on solving a chosen problem connected with sustainable development in a form of a group project. As a result of completing this course students will be able to: Identify key elements in ESD, including a basic understanding of SD. Identify key elements in ESD research and policy. Identify and conceptualise teaching approaches to ESD teaching and learning. Conduct a minor ESD analysis |
Literatura: |
The bibliography consists of a few mandatory books. Moreover, articles from popular scientific and scientific international journals and Internet will be included. The student will also have a chance to choose individual literature in connection to the project work and the take home assignment. The educational approach is learning by doing and the course requires active participation in all activities, as well as individual preparation through reading of literature and group work. 1. Engagement in learning process. 2. Being active. 3. Presenting and solving a chosen problem connected with sustainability. 4. Group project. |
