Skrócony opis:

What is evidence-based teaching and how can it support learning? In our seminars, we will explore the latest findings in cognitive psychology and their practical applications in education. We will delve into topics such as distributed practice, interleaved practice, practice testing, and elaboration, aiming to understand how they improve learning. We will also investigate effective note-taking methods during lectures and consider how to implement these techniques in teaching. Our classes follow the principle: " I see, and I forget. I hear, and I remember. I do, and I understand." Each session begins with a classroom experiment, allowing participants to directly observe cognitive processes underlying learning.

Students’ knowledge and skills will be evaluated through an in-class open-book test, designed to gauge students' comprehension of a journal article. Students will also be required to create a video tutorial elucidating a key aspect of teaching or learning based on research.

Zajęcia będą odzwierciedleniem zasady: „Powiedz mi a zapomnę, pokaż mi a zapamiętam, pozwól mi wziąć udział, a zrozumiem.” Punktem wyjścia każdego spotkania będzie eksperyment klasowy, w którym osoby zaangażowane będą mogły bezpośrednio przyjrzeć się procesom poznawczym zachodzącym podczas uczenia się, a dzięki temu, lepiej zrozumieć mechanizmy podnoszące wydajność tych procesów.

What does research have to say about learning and teaching? During the workshops, we will explore the latest achievements of cognitive psychology and their potential applications in the field of education. We will investigate, and even experience, the benefits of spaced practice, the interleaving, the impact of various forms of knowledge assessment on information retention (the testing effect), and how deliberate information processing (elaboration) supports the learning process. We will attempt to answer questions about the advantages of taking notes during lectures by choosing the most effective way to create them, determine which note-taking method provides the greatest mnemonic advantage, and which is the most student-friendly. We will consider how to incorporate these discussed techniques into pedagogical practice. The classes will reflect the principle: "I see, and I forget. I hear, and I remember. I do, and I understand." The starting point for each meeting will be a classroom experiment, in which those involved will be able to directly observe the cognitive processes that occur during learning, thus gaining a better understanding of the mechanisms that enhance the efficiency of these processes.

Uwagi:

Teaching methods:

- in-class experiments to illustrate basic concepts and strategies followed by discussion

- jigsaw method followed by an in-class group presentation

- video based activities

2 ECTS points:

12 contact hours

12 hours to prepare for class (familiarisation with specialised vocabulary, reading of articles)

4 hours to prepare for an in-class test

20 hours to prepare a video tutorial

In-class test

The open-book test is structured to assess the application of knowledge and critical thinking skills. Students will be provided with the designated journal article in advance, allowing them to familiarize themselves with the content. During the test, they will be permitted to refer to their notes, textbooks. The chosen journal article will be carefully selected to cover relevant topics aligned with the course objectives. The questions in the test will be designed to assess comprehension, analysis, and the ability to draw connections between theoretical concepts and practical applications.

Video tutorial

Students will also be required to demonstrate their understanding and mastery of a chosen topic by creating a video tutorial. This task aims to evaluate not only their comprehension of the subject matter but also their ability to effectively communicate and teach the material to their peers.

The final mark will be calculated as an average of the two marks.
